Bayern Munich’s goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer has encountered a setback in his recovery from a calf injury, as confirmed by the club in a statement on Saturday.
Neuer has been sidelined since suffering a torn calf muscle whilst celebrating a goal during Bayern’s Champions League last-16 clash against Bayer Leverkusen earlier in March.
The 38-year-old had recently returned to training with the ball, but unfortunately reinjured the calf muscle during this weekend’s training session.
Bayern announced that Neuer experienced “a reaction in the calf muscle” and will need to refrain from training “for the next few days”.
This setback casts doubt on Neuer’s availability for Bayern’s Bundesliga home match against St Pauli on March 29. Additionally, Bayern is set to compete against Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals across two legs in April.
Neuer’s deputy, 21-year-old Jonas Urbig, also did not participate with Germany’s U21 team during the international break due to a foot injury.
The Bavarian club can also rely on Israel’s national goalkeeper Daniel Peretz and Sven Ulreich as alternatives within the squad.
Bayern currently holds a six-point lead over second-placed Leverkusen with eight games left in the league this season.
