Bayer Leverkusen produced a remarkable comeback, fighting back from two goals down on two occasions to claim a thrilling 4-3 victory against VfB Stuttgart at the MHPArena. This win closed the gap to the top of the Bundesliga to six points and extended their impressive unbeaten streak in away league matches to 30.
Although Stuttgart has not tasted victory against Leverkusen at home in 15 years, the visitors’ recent run of three consecutive losses made this encounter seem opportune.
Stuttgart capitalised on the struggles of their opponents within the first 15 minutes, as Jamie Leweling’s angled shot was parried by Lukas Hradecky, allowing Ermedin Demirovic to pounce on the rebound and score.
Demirovic’s goal, marking his tenth of the season on his 150th Bundesliga appearance, sparked more attacking opportunities for Stuttgart, including a crucial intervention by Exequiel Palacios, who prevented Enzo Millot from getting a shot off from close range.
Leverkusen gradually found their rhythm but struggled to mount a significant attack, while Stuttgart continued to threaten, forcing Hradecky into a save from Millot’s effort.
The visitors soon found themselves punished for their forward push right after the break, as Millot showcased his skill on the counter, setting up an unmarked Nick Woltemade, who found the bottom-left corner with his shot.
However, the reigning champions demonstrated their resilience, with Jeremie Frimpong reducing the deficit by slotting home into the far corner after a block from Robert Andrich redirected the ball into his path.
Leverkusen faced another hurdle when Hradecky’s stop from Demirovic’s shot deflected off Granit Xhaka and into the net, but Piero Hincapie quickly responded by powering in a header past Alexander Nubel following a corner to make it 3-2.
Chances continued to come and go for Xabi Alonso’s side, but they finally found their equaliser with just three minutes remaining, as Victor Boniface’s cross was deftly touched past Nubel by Angelo Stiller.
In a repeat of their late-game heroics from last season, Patrik Schick sealed the win with a superb header from Frimpong’s cross, scoring in stoppage time.
With this victory, Leverkusen’s incredible away record dating back to the 2022/23 season remains unbroken, and they capitalise on Bayern Munich’s recent misstep.
The gap to the top three has now narrowed to six points, while Stuttgart finds themselves needing to make up eight points if they hope to replicate last season’s achievements and secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
