Barcelona will pay tribute to their late team doctor, Carles Minarro Garcia, by giving their all in Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 clash against Benfica, as stated by manager Hansi Flick during a brief press conference on Monday.
After observing a moment of silence, the German coach expressed that the past couple of days had been particularly tough as the team mourns the sudden loss of Minarro, who passed away just hours before Saturday’s postponed match against Osasuna.
Flick mentioned that the players are motivated to perform against Benfica, whom they currently lead 1-0 following the first leg, in honour of a man who was both admired and respected in the dressing room.
“I believe the team is coping with the situation well. We’re fully focused on the match and determined to play for him. It’s crucial for us to secure a victory in his memory. We are prepared for the challenge,” Flick remarked during the press conference.
“We must carry on and move forward; it’s our responsibility. Advancing in the competition holds significant importance for the club, and we aim to perform well in his honour.”
“It’s an immense loss. He was an exceptional individual and a fantastic doctor. His contributions to the team and the club were invaluable, and he will be profoundly missed.”
Following a hard-fought victory against Benfica last week, which saw defender Pau Cubarsi given a red card early on, Flick expressed confidence that Barcelona could maintain their momentum and progress in the tournament.
The team is currently enjoying a 16-match unbeaten streak across all competitions and is vying for three major titles, sitting at the top of LaLiga and having reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, where they drew 4-4 with Atletico Madrid in the opening leg, with a return match scheduled for April 2nd.
“We are in a fantastic phase, riding a great wave of momentum. We hope to keep it going,” Flick said.
“I see the team as very focused. This morning, we had a discussion and reflected on all the positive things they’ve achieved lately.
“No one is taking anything for granted, which is crucial. When the team is in a good dynamic, that’s what truly matters to me.”
