Aston Villa bolstered their ambitions for a top-four finish in the Premier League by defeating one of the current contenders, Nottingham Forest, with a scoreline of 2-1 at Villa Park, extending their unbeaten streak at home to 17 matches.
This season, there have not been many instances where Nottingham Forest’s defence has been caught off guard, but they were certainly caught napping within the first 15 minutes at Villa Park.
A swiftly-executed free kick by Villa saw Youri Tielemans deliver a pinpoint ball in behind the defence, allowing Morgan Rogers to collect and shoot through the legs of goalkeeper Matz Sels.
Forest’s defensive line looked disorganised early on, and a clinical Villa side seized the opportunity to double their lead just two minutes later, with a dangerous cross from Ian Maatsen being converted at the far post by the unmarked Donyell Malen.

Although Forest struggled defensively in the opening exchanges, they began to display flashes of their quality midway through the first half. A brilliant solo run from Anthony Elanga, which started in his own half, resulted in a close-range shot that whistled just past the post, followed by a missed opportunity from Callum Hudson-Odoi shortly after.
It wasn’t until the second half that Forest began to test Villa more effectively.
Neco Williams was the first to take aim for Forest after the break, but when presented with a chance in the area, he curled his effort wide, with Hudson-Odoi making a similar mistake moments later.
This proved to be a temporary respite for Villa, as they soon found their lead reduced when Jota Silva, who came on at half-time, scored with a deflected shot into the bottom corner.
The game’s momentum shifted at this point, and Forest nearly equalised just a few moments later when Elliot Anderson’s attempt curled inches past the far corner.
Unai Emery opted for a triple substitution in an effort to regain control, but it was Rogers, one of his key players, who missed a golden chance to restore the two-goal lead, thwarted by Sels after a superb individual effort that left two Forest defenders behind.

These adjustments helped Villa regain some composure, though they still presented a significant chance to Williams, who sent a shot across the goalmouth that had Emiliano Martínez concerned.
In stoppage time, Murillo struck the crossbar, but Forest couldn’t deny Villa their seventh consecutive win across all competitions. This winning momentum could prove vital ahead of their crucial midweek encounter against PSG in the Champions League.
