After an extended absence, Andreas Christensen makes his return to the FC Barcelona squad for tonight’s clash against Real Betis in La Liga.
Coach Hansi Flick has announced a 22-man squad for the encounter with Manuel Pellegrini’s side, welcoming back the Danish defender following his recovery from a calf injury. However, Iñigo Martinez will miss out due to a minor gluteal injury in his left leg.
The Danish international centre-back sustained an injury to the soleus muscle in his right leg earlier this month, which initially sidelined him for around four weeks.
This season has been challenging for Christensen, plagued by injuries that have hindered his progress, restricting him to just 27 minutes of action during the opening match against Valencia at Mestalla.
Hansi Flick will be eager to have Christensen available for the final part of the season, where he is expected to play a key role in central defence. Additionally, he may be called upon in midfield, as Marc Casadó is expected to be unavailable until at least mid-May, leaving only Frenkie de Jong and Eric García as dependable options in that area.
With just over a year remaining on his contract, there’s growing speculation that Barcelona might look to replace the injury-prone Dane with Jonathan Tah in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The match against Real Betis is set to kick off at 21:00 CET at the Olympic Stadium.
