Ajax’s head coach, Francesco Farioli, is resolute in his choice to field a largely reserve side during their UEFA Europa League round of 16 first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt.
In a press conference on Wednesday, the Italian tactician underscored the Europa League’s significance for Ajax, calling it an “important competition” as they pursue the Eredivisie title.
Farioli’s decision to implement ten changes in the starting eleven from last week’s 2-1 first-leg defeat raised eyebrows among supporters, leading many to believe he had all but abandoned Ajax’s quest in the Europa League.
“Was I mistaken? I don’t believe so,” Farioli stated following the team’s 4-1 loss. “I would make the same choice again without hesitation.”
“It hurts to have lost, but we must press on. This Sunday we face AZ, a team that has already caused us considerable trouble this season.”
Currently, Ajax holds an 8-point lead over second-placed PSV, yet they must confront AZ in Amsterdam this Sunday — a side that has triumphed over them twice already this season.
Injuries prompted Farioli to shuffle his lineup after striker Brian Brobbey suffered a knee injury during last weekend’s league fixture against PEC Zwolle. Additionally, centre-back Youri Baas was unavailable due to a lack of match fitness, while captain Jordan Henderson was sidelined by a suspension, leaving Farioli with numerous uncertainties.

“I don’t believe we’ve thrown in the towel. I also don’t want to hear the term ‘B-team’; that’s immensely disrespectful. When we faced Union with what some might have called a ‘B team’, we came away with a win,” he added.
Reflecting on the journey
Ajax’s Europa League adventure commenced back in July 2024, facing Serbian side Vojvodina Novi Sad in the second qualifying round. This season, the Dutch powerhouse has participated in 18 European fixtures.
“Now we are concluding our European chapter. We relished our time in the Europa League and felt a vast array of emotions. Our ambition was to advance to the league phase, and we accomplished that,” Farioli remarked.
“We faced a match with 34 penalties against Panathinaikos and endured playing 110 minutes with ten men against Union (Saint Gilloise). We performed admirably against Besiktas and Maccabi, but had our struggles in Riga.
“Despite the ups and downs, it’s been a rewarding experience; now our focus shifts back to the Eredivisie.”
